Luc Besson is gearing up to return to the realm of science fiction in a big way with ‘Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets‘ and he’s just released not only an image from the film but some details of one of the characters as well!

While the trailer was beautiful, there is still a lot to learn and see about this new world that we’re going to be treated to later this year. Included is an image of Ambassador Dan Makta which has been done using a combination of both CG and practical effects which are the plan for the majority of the film. Interestingly enough, Besson had reached out to schools for new artists to help with the film and 15 of over 2,000 applicants were selected to be a part of the visual effects of the film!

First up, here is the first shot of Ambassador Dan Makta:

Makta will be joining the leading characters of Valerian and Laureline in the movie in the city of Alpha. According to Besson:

“Most of the time when you see aliens in a film, they’re trying to destroy things, but Alpha is the city of science and culture: everybody is exchanging knowledge. It’s a very rich world.”

Previously when describing Alpha, Busson has said that it is a “city of science, Broadway, Wall Street, Shibuya, Pigalle” and that if you’re looking for something here, “everything you want in one place.”

Sounds like our heroes will have a lot of ground to cover when they arrive and Dan Makta might just be the person to help them do so.
