At this year’s Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour we learned that Len Wiseman is still knee deep in development for his upcoming ‘Underworld‘ television series. As the director of the first two films, he has been personally involved in its creation and while ‘Underworld: Next Generation’ will be reuniting Kate Beckinsale’s Selene with Theo James’ David from ‘Underworld: Awakening‘, we’re all pretty sure that the television series will go a different route when expanding this franchise. The guessing game kicks in as he doesn’t tell us much about what we can expect and just that it seems his plan is to expand the existing cinematic universe and not reboot it.

That is something which could be a boon to long term fans of the franchise.

The good news ends there, though, as there is no word on when the series will move forward, if a deal with a network has been reached, or who we’ll be following in it but Wiseman give this tease:

“Yes, there’s been a lot of conversations and even development on what that series would be. It’s really appropriate for television, in terms of how those characters can really tie in, but also become something new. It’s really an attractive space. I don’t want to put a date on it because then that’s going to be printed and it might not happen in that timeframe, but it is a thought.”

So they might in fact have the timing figured out. I’m happy that they are going the ‘Marvel’s Agent’s Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ route (at least before Disney split the TV and Cinematic studios up a bit) to flesh out what we’ve already seen and not start something completely new. With a world of vampires, werewolves, and humanity knowing about both sides there are a lot of directions that this series could go.
