Have your grain of salt ready?  Good, you’ll need it!  Because this little nugget is strictly a RUMOR!  But word has emerged that Warner Brothers is looking to add another female hero to its ‘Justice League’ movies– Black Canary!  Not only that, but supposedly she will then spin off into a ‘Birds of Prey’ movie!  AND the studio already has its eye on two potential castings, Alona Tal and Abbey Lee!

Alona Tal recently starred on the TV series ‘Hand of God’.

The Israeli-born Tal recently starred on the series ‘Hand of God’ and has previously starred on ‘Burn Notice’ and ‘The Cult’.  She may be most recognizable to genre fans for playing Jo on ‘Supernatural’.

Former Victoria’s Secret model, Lee was recently seen as The Dag in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and will appear in the upcoming ‘Gods of Egypt’.

A couple of weeks ago, we brought you word that there were plans to introduce Mera in the first ‘Justice League,’ slated for release on November 17, 2017, which makes sense, as ‘Aquaman’ is due just a few months later on July 27, 2018.  Not to draw too many comparisons, but the two ‘Avengers’ movies were certainly peppered with characters and plot points from the individual characters’ solo movies.  Even though DC is going mostly in reverse– doing ‘Justice League’ before spinning the heroes off from that– it would be natural that the characters get a bit of backstory in ‘JL’ beforehand.  Therefore, a Mera cameo makes sense.

Black Canary, though?  The character she is most affiliated with is Green Arrow and there has been zero mention of him appearing in the movies.  That’s not to say it will never happen, but it hasn’t come up before now.

We’re still years away from ‘Justice League’ but it’s likely it will involve the heroes– Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg– coming together to battle Darkseid.  It’s unclear how Black Canary would factor in, unless it’s maybe to give the team more balance, so that Wonder Woman isn’t the token female.

In the comics, Black Canary, whose real name is Dinah Lance, joined the Justice League to replace Wonder Woman, who had lost her powers and given up her super identity.  Then after ‘Crisis on Infinite Earths’, when Wonder Woman’s history was changed making her a brand new hero, Black Canary was retconned as a founding member of the JLA in her place.

But it was as the leader of the more espionage-based ‘Birds of Prey’ that Dinah really came into her own as one of the most popular female heroes in comics.  The team was co-founded by Oracle, a.k.a. Barbara Gordon, who Jena Malone may or may not be playing in ‘Batman V Superman’.

Currently, Katie Cassidy plays Dinah Laurel Lance (she goes by Laurel) a.k.a. Black Canary on ‘Arrow’, but that’s completely separate.

Like I said, take this with a grain of salt!  Yes, a ‘Black Canary’ or ‘Birds of Prey’ movie would be great!  But this is the first we’re all hearing about it and there’s been no official announcement.
