While Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien: Covenant‘ has put Neill Blomkamp‘s alien film on hold indefinetely (and may likely have killed it), we’ve just found out some surprising details on who would have starred in it. We already know that Michael Biehn would have returned as Hicks and the third and fourth Alien films would have either been retconned or followed in the same way the video game found a way to keep him alive. But there was another surprising character who would have starred.

It seems that Newt was set to make a comeback.

All of a sudden the story of Fox shutting down production on the fan film ‘The Alien Identity‘ earlier this year that had a similar scenario in mind makes a lot more sense.

According to Biehn in an interview with Icons of Fright:

“The basic idea is acting like Alien 3 and 4 never existed. … I know Ridley Scott is doing his movie first and is going to be the executive producer on this one, so I’m really looking forward to that. I know that Ridley’s focus is on [Alien: Covenant] and I’m sure that he and Fox both don’t want that and Neill’s movie to come out right next to each other, because they’re kind of two different worlds, with Aliens taking place thousands of years later, which is how they explained it all to me, but at the same time, they want to give them a similar feel. I know they’re putting the brakes on Neill’s movie just for a little while, but I really think that it would be embarrassing to Ridley and Fox and Sigourney [Weaver] if they just didn’t make the movie.”

Considering how excited we all were and that Weaver was on board to finally reprise the role that made us all love her in the first place it really seems like a no brainer that Fox would still make the movie. I mean they let ‘Fantastic Four’ get released so something that sounds this good should be a no brainer.

So with 3 and 4 out of the picture completely it would be easy to have Newt alive:

“They’re planning on bringing me and Newt back and at this point Newt will be around twenty-seven years old. I know that every actress in Hollywood is going to want to play this one, it’s really a passing of the torch between Sigourney and this younger actress who would play Newt. It would keep the franchise alive and the studios would make money, because that’s what the bottom line is now: money. That’s why you end up seeing Terminator 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 10 and The Fast And Furious 7, 8, 9, and 10.”

While we could still hope that this film sees the light of day, at this time it looks like we’re only in line for some prequels to be released. It would seem with cinematic world building being the big thing right now it would almost make sense for Fox to have the prequel ‘Prometheus’ based movies happening with Blomkamp’s future films being released in between them.
