We don’t know much about the villains in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ though we have learned that Andy Serkis will be playing Supreme Leader Snoke who might be the one in charge of the Galactic Empire. While Adam Driver’s Sith-like Kylo Ren seems to be the main villain that our heroes will be up against, I suspect that we’ll see him having more of a Darth Vader role while Snoke will end up being more like Emperor Palpatine and running things while having his soldiers do most of the dirty work.

We aren’t the only ones who didn’t have a lot of details about the character as Serkis says:

“It’s the first time I’ve been on set not yet knowing what the character’s gonna look like. I mean, talk about secrecy!”

Hard to do method acting without knowing what your character looks like! They did give him an idea though his final form wasn’t decided upon until Serkis really got involved:

“When we first started working on it, he had some rough notions of how Snoke was gonna look, but it really hadn’t been fully-formed and it almost came out of discussion and performance.”

The character is one for planning in the long term and is like Palpatine:

“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful. Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”

That damaged reference is injured. Does he mean physically or psychologically? Not only tha,t but is it involved from something that happened anywhere in the original ‘Star Wars’ trilogy?

“No, he’s a new character in this universe. It is very much a newly-introduced character. He’s aware of what’s gone on, in the respect that he has been around and is aware of prior events. I think it’d be fair to say that he is aware of the past to a great degree.”

While Serkis is known for motion capture, is this a character which could have been done by make up alone?

“No, no. The scale of him, for instance, is one reason. He is large. He appears tall. And also just the facial design – you couldn’t have gotten there with prosthetics. It’s too extreme. Without giving too much away at this point, he has a very distinctive, idiosyncratic bone structure and facial structure. You could never have done it [in real life.]”It is good to know that the practical effects are in full force here as only he and Lupita Nyong’o’s.”

It is good to know that the practical effects are in full force here as only he and Lupita Nyong’o’s Maz Kanata “are the only two performance-capture characters in an otherwise very analog world.”

Are you looking forward to seeing what this giant Supreme Leader Snoke is going to look like? How do you feel the Galactic Empire will do with following an alien in a predominantly humanoid run society? Share your thoughts below!
