Dimension Television wants to breathe new life into Stephen King‘s novella ‘The Mist’ by giving it a small screen adaptation. The concept they are putting together will be based off of both King’s work as well as Frank Darabont’s (‘The Shawshank Redemption’,’The Green Mile’) film which was released in 2007. The series is being written by Christian Torpe (‘Rita’) who King has given his blessing too. With Dimension Television recently having positive feedback from their ‘Scream’ series on MTV, it seems obvious that they would want to continue their success though I’m not sure if this is the series to go with.

According to Bob Weinstein who is head of Weinstein Company and Dimension Films:

“The terror and drama in Stephen King‘s novella are so vast that we felt serialized television is the best place to explore them in greater depth. With this show, Christian has created a fascinating band of characters and a story with infinite scares.”

The story itself tells of a town which is mysteriously covered in a mist. From it emerges some of our greatest fears as the monsters that go bump in the night become real.

With ‘The Mist’ being one of my favorite King movies to date due to its Lovecraftian aspects and dark character turns, I am extremely curious as to how much will be taken from the novella and how much from the film. I do suspect that at the very least the ending will be based more off of King’s work in order to find a way to continue the series with the main characters. This could work if they go into this as an ongoing tale of survival with an overall story arc and not a monster of the week premise. I really have mixed thoughts on this one. On the one hand they could create a horror series which could capture the same kind of fan base as ‘The Walking Dead’ has while on the other hand it could end up like ‘Under the Dome.’

We all know that while the last of King’s ended up running for 3 seasons on NBC, once it raced past the source material the show increasingly hit a downward spiral in both quality and ratings. On the flip side, ‘Haven‘ over at Syfy which was based off of the short, ‘The Colorado Kid,’ ran for five seasons with fans clamoring for more even though ratings unfortunately didn’t support it.

If anything I hope that this series lands on ‘AMC’ or one of the premiere networks just in order to allow the showrunner free reign on really amping up the terror.

Are you looking forward to an ongoing series based off of ‘The Mist’? Which network do you think it will end up landing on? Share your thoughts below!
