After three seasons the CBS adaptation of ‘Under the Dome‘ is coming to a close. In what should come as a surprise to no one, the network has cancelled the series due to poor ratings.

It isn’t a good time to be a Stephen King series as Syfy has just given ‘Haven‘ the ax as well. If you are worried about closure though we do have some good news to share with you. While the September 10th Season 3 finale is now the series finale, CBS has promised that the ending will be letting us know exactly what has been going on in the dome. We’ll actually be finding out what the dome has been doing and why it has kept these Maine townsfolk separated from the rest of the world. As the series completely diverged from the novel by the end of the first season it will be interesting to see if they follow a similar premise as the original work or will have a completely different twist in store for us. CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler stresses that the series did help the network find a new way to create television with their deals put in place with streaming networks:

“Two years ago, Under the Dome broke new ground in the summer and became an instant hit on CBS, as well as with viewers around the world. Dome’s event storytelling and multi-platform business model paved the way for more original summer programming with the successful rollouts of Extant and Zoo. We’re excited to present the final chapter in Chester’s Mill as the story comes full circle, with the Dome coming down as dramatically as it went up.”

Shows such as ‘Extant’ and ‘Zoo’ are two perfect examples of this with the deals from Amazon and Netflix having allowed them to be filmed. Still, for fan’s of ‘Under the Dome’ this will be the end as the producers have no intentions to shop a continuation of the series around to another network or streaming service. It was an interesting premise to take King’s novel and expand upon it but the further away from the source material the show went, the more it seemed to lose steam and audience attention.

The series finale of ‘Under the Dome’ will air Thursday, September 10.
