Big budget expected-blockbusters are often cloaked in mystery as filmmakers struggle against increasing scrutiny of such projects.  Often actors are sternly forbidden to discuss much if anything about these films in fear that too much will be revealed which could spoil a movie.  Anthony Daniels, who has played C-3PO for going on forty years recently spoke out against such “Kremlin”-levels of secrecy.  And in the case of J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek Into Darkness,’ that constant denial and cover up actually backfired, as savvy audience members saw these actions as what they basically are– flat out lying to fans.

Still, studios and directors want viewers to get some surprises when they see a movie, so you can’t blame them for trying to hush things up as best they can.  Benicio del Toro may have found this out after he recently spilled to a Spanish language outlet:

“Ehhh, the thing is, they don’t let me talk too much about it. I’m like the villain. But we’ll see.”

Now, del Toro is backpedaling, telling ‘Entertainment Tonight’:

“I don’t know if he’s a villain. People are saying that, but it’s like they read a different script than I read.”

Or… maybe they just read your quote that came out of your mouth a couple of weeks ago.

Del Toro has apparently stepped over to The Dark Side, or at least the side that wants to throw a tarp over this movie so that fans can’t see what’s in store.

“It’s nice to keep people in the dark, a little bit of mystery is good. If they want to believe it’s the villain, then good.”

At this point, fans really don’t know much about ‘The Force Awakens’, which comes out this year.  And next year sees the arrival of ‘Rogue One’ the first anthology film that doesn’t directly tie into the new trilogy, so the as-yet-untitled ‘Episode VIII’ is over two years from gracing screens.  So it’s pretty premature to even be concerned with it, in my opinion.  Maybe once ‘The Force Awakens’ arrives, that storyline could hint at things to come.

For now, Benicio del Toro is in ‘Episode VIII’ and may be a villain or not.

Does it matter to you whether you know who the bad guy in the next-next ‘Star Wars’ will be played by?  Are you already craving insider scoop on ‘Episode VIII’ before ‘Episode VII’ has even hit?
