Casting for super hero movies typically catches fans off guard as the studios tend to select actors that aren’t always obvious choices, but should Tyrese Gibson land the role of Green Lantern/John Stewart, it would be a case of fan casting come true!  For months now, fans have been rallying behind the ‘Fast & Furious’ star to slip on the Power Ring of the former Marine who has served as a longtime member of the Justice League.  Should Gibson nab this role, he will be the third ‘Fast & Furious’ cast member to join the DC Cinematic Universe, following Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman and Dwayne Johnson who is playing Black Adam in ‘Shazam’.

While several other DC super heroes are appearing in next year’s ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice’— Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa as Aquaman and Ray Fisher as Cyborg, as well as a possible appearance by Ezra Miller as The Flash— there has been no mention of Green Lantern and with news of 2020’s ‘Green Lantern Corps’ coming in slowly, it appears that the Emerald Crusader is being held for a later debut, most likely in the two-part ‘Justice League’ film.

‘Green Lantern Corps’ will be an ensemble piece, unlike the 2011 solo bomb starring Ryan Reynolds.  It is expected that ‘Corps’ will feature at least two Earth Lanterns, so with Gibson playing Stewart, it’s most likely the second starring role will be Hal Jordan.  Chris Pine has recently been rumored to be up for the Jordan part.

While promoting the DVD release of ‘Furious 7,’ Gibson opened up about the possibility of playing Green Lantern, including acknowledging the role the fans have played in his being considered for the possibility.

“Well I was innocent from the beginning. I was at home eating a bowl of Lucky Charms in my drawers, my ugly feet were out, and I got about six direct messages on Instagram with photos of me as the Green Lantern. This particular fan who did this fan art said that there was a community of people that had been talking for like a month and a half about who they think would be the best Green Lantern and they all picked me. I said to them, ‘I took the oath, and I am going to commit myself to this process of seeing what’s possible.’”

“I’ve already had a couple of meetings at Warner Bros., so we’ll see what happens. I do believe that there needs to be more black superheroes out there, but that’s not even my motivation. I think I would be the best Green Lantern and based on my fans and supporters that spent around $6 billion in box office receipts, I feel like there’s a fanbase of fans out there waiting to see me put on this green suit and do my thing. So I would love to confirm something today but I can’t. We’ll just keep following up.”

Previously, Gibson was in the running to play Marvel’s Luke Cage, back when buddy/frequent collaborator John Singleton was slated to direct a movie based on the character.  Since then, Marvel has shifted Luke Cage  to its line of Netflix shows, with Mike Colter playing the Hero For Hire.

Are you a fan of Tyrese Gibson?  Would he make a great John Stewart?
