When news dropped recently saying that Oscar-winning writer and producer John Ridley is working on a Marvel Studios series for ABC, True Believers began sharing their theories about what the show could be. The ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ spinoff starring Adrianne Palicki and Nick Blood was ruled out since executive producer Jeffrey Bell and writer Paul Zbyszewski look to be running that ship. Other possibilities I’ve seen included names like the Punisher, Cloak and Dagger, and She-Hulk, but I threw out the suggestion that Ridley develop a Young Avengers show to combat the upcoming ‘Teen Titans’ series from DC. Well, according to the latest rumors, he is actually looking at bringing a teen hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s just not one of the ones that I suggested.

Comic Book Movie uncovered a report from Reddit that says G. Willow Wilson and Adrian Alphona’s acclaimed comic series ‘Ms. Marvel’ is the next Marvel Comics property to be given a live-action adaptation thanks to ABC and John Ridley. In the post from user WorkUnrelatedAcciden (which has since been deleted), it’s said that the network originally pitched Cloak and Dagger to Ridley, but he took more interest in incorporating Kamala Khan into the MCU. While this is extremely promising news, Kamala Corps members may be wondering how this can be possible without the young hero’s inspiration Captain Marvel starring in her own solo film until 2018. Apparently, here’s the answer:

“The current plan is to slow-burn her origin into actually being Ms. Marvel over time a la ‘Daredevil’ (or at least in terms of her taking that name, I don’t know whether or not she’ll have her costume from the start or wait it out). The series will focus more on her fascination with superheroes in general, while balancing issues of religion, racism and Islamaphobia along with her crime fighting.”

I’m curious to see how the name situation will work out, but otherwise I am so down for this. It fits perfectly into the direction that ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is going since they’re introducing more and more Inhumans as the second season progresses. Plus, it not only focuses on a teenage hero or a female superhero, which are areas that are just begging to be explored more in Marvel’s movie universe, but also a POC superhero as well that will probably end up being a cross of ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ lead Eddie Huang and Agent Phil Coulson. While it’s great to see Falcon, War Machine, and Skye/Daisy Johnson/Quake step up as prominent multi-cultural super-powered characters, it definitely doesn’t hurt to have a few more.

Of course, you should take this news with a grain of salt for now. However, if you’re like me, it’s hard to contain your excitement for this potential project. So until we hear an official word about John Ridley’s mystery Marvel TV show, let us know what you think about the possibility of seeing a Ms. Marvel series starring Kamala Khan on ABC in the comment section below.
