Now that ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ is nearly upon us, Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm are shifting their focus towards the future of the iconic sci-fi franchise. At a recent shareholders meeting, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that Rian Johnson’s ‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ would be released on May 26, 2017. However, before the second chapter in the new trilogy hits theaters, we’ll see the first ‘Star Wars’ spinoff titled ‘Rogue One’ first. The standalone film from director Gareth Edwards and writers Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz will star Academy Award nominated actress Felicity Jones, but now we might just have an idea about who will appear in a galaxy far, far away beside her.

Deadline broke the news that Ben Mendelsohn is circling a lead role in ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ alongside the ‘Like Crazy’ and ‘Theory of Everything’ star. The Australian actor has been making a splash with such projects as ‘Killing Them Softly’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, ‘The Place Beyond The Pines’, and Netflix’s ‘Bloodline’.

While there are currently no details regarding the character that either of these stars could be playing, there is even less known about the film as a whole. The popular theory is that the movie follows a group of bounty hunters plotting to steal the plans for the first Death Star, but there hasn’t been any official announcement made to confirm that information. With Star Wars Celebration around the corner, it’s very possible that we could learn all the specifics for ‘Rogue One’ at the convention in Anaheim. Until then, we’ll have to spend all our time trading thoughts and theories.

What do you think about Ben Mendelsohn potentially joining the cast of ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’? Who do you think he’ll be playing in the film? For that matter, who do you think Felicity Jones will be playing? Sound off in the comment section.

‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ starring Felicity Jones hits theaters on December 16, 2016.
