James Gunn, director of “Guardians of the Galaxy” recently opened up about his love of the Nebula character in the first film, and his hopes for the her in the future of the franchise in a recent interview with Yahoo Movies.

“I have so many plans for Nebula…I love Nebula. I fell in love with the design of Nebula. I cast the role around that design. I fell in love with Karen [Gillan] as a person, and I love the character of Nebula.”

His love for the character even goes into what some may consider fan-boy blasphemy, comparing her to an indelibly cool and fan favorite character from another hit (and also now owned by Disney) franchise:

“To me, she’s the Boba Fett of the movie…She’s the one that you really dig because she’s the cool one that we need to get more of. I hope to god that we get a chance to see a lot more of Nebula [in future ‘Guardians’ films].”

He also briefly mentions that Nebula  has a rather nebulous morality code, and that she is not entirely good or evil, much like many other characters in the movie including the blue-skinned Yondu and even the Guardians themselves, who only unite to stop the threat of Ronan from destroying the galaxy. Nebula, like Gamora, are only adopted daughters to the mad Titan Thanos, and as such she also has the potential to rebel against her abusive and power-mad father, and perhaps become an ally to the Guardians over the course of their next adventure.
Of course, for the woman behind the character, Karen Gillan, all of the love from James Gunn will most likely lead to another visit from the clippers, as Gunn had insisted on her shaving her head for the first film, and will most likely ask her to do the same for the next chapter.

Until that next chapter starts coming together, look for the original ‘Guardians of the Galaxy” to hit stores on Blu-Ray and DVD on December 9th!
