With the Disney buyout of Fox looming,  it seems unlikely that they’ll get a new Silver Surfer movie into production before it goes through, so if Marvel Studios wants to make one they won’t have to look much further than Adam McKay! The director of the recently released ‘Vice’ had previously worked in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on helping to write ‘Ant-Man,’ and this is a movie he’d love to tackle to transition back into comic films.

When Edgar Wright stepped away from ‘Ant-Man,’ Kevin Feige turned to McKay to direct the film. He wasn’t interested in filling his friend’s shoes but did agree to help write it, and the studio has had an interest in the director ever since. If we see the Herald of Galactus introduced into the MCU anytime soon it looks like Marvel Studios wouldn’t have to look hard for a director.

As to why McKay is interested in the Silver Surfer:

“Silver Surfer is the one I want to do, man. I would do anything to do Silver Surfer because, visually, you could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer with the Silver Surfer. At the same time, there’s a great emotional story in there, man, where Norrin Radd [Silver Surfer] has to make the choice to save his planet. That would be the one, but I think Fox owns the rights …”

It was at this point in the interview that McKay was informed that Marvel Studios is likely to get the rights back to all of their characters from Fox soon:

“Alright, I’ll call [Fox Film chief] Emma Watts; I’ll call [Marvel Studios head] Kevin Feige. I think you’ve just created the Silver Surfer movie. I think after Dick Cheney and economic collapse, maybe I need a little break.”

While this was said in jest, there may have been a nugget of truth to it. James Gunn is no longer around to be the guiding hand to the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe which is a direction that the studio had previously wanted to expand. The Silver Surfer is a great character to feature who has had ties to nearly every significant cosmic creation at this point and could be a great way to not only give us a fun story but further explore the Marvel Galaxy.

It should be noted that Brian K. Vaughan was developing a Silver Surfer movie for Fox at the beginning of this year but with a lack of updates on it and the creator being busy with his new deal with Legendary it feels like he might be too busy to get this done in time.

Would you be thrilled to see Adam McKay write and direct a ‘Silver Surfer’ movie? If so, what run do you hope he would base the plot around? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!
