Once Scott Derrickson took the director’s chair for ‘Doctor Strange,’ we knew that a darker movie was in store for us but we still didn’t know who would take on the robes of the Sorcerer Supreme. We still don’t, however it looks like Marvel has a short list of six key actors that they’d like to have don the Eye of Agamotto. Doctor Strange is an off beat character both from having the ego of Tony Stark at one point, the dedication in becoming one of the world’s greatest doctors, and the ability to deal with giant creatures from the depths of Hell and beyond. You are going to need just the right kind of personality to pull it off and Marvel has a great set of choices. Some of these could be a great fit for the role and most of them are names that you would be familiar with.

So who is on the short list to play the good Doctor? Drum roll please…

Ewan McGregor (‘Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith’, ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’), Jake Gyllenhaal (‘Source Code‘,’Donnie Darko‘), Oscar Isaac (‘Sucker Punch‘, ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’), Jared Leto (‘Dallas Buyers Club’, ‘Requiem for a Dream’), Ethan Hawke (‘Gattaca’,’Sinister‘), and Matthew McConaughey (‘Interstellar’,’True Detective’).

I think that is a pretty strong line up to choose from. For how I tend to picture Strange from reading the comics though, I would personally put Hawke at the top of my list. While Leto would make a good second choice and I’ve been enjoying everything that McConaughey does as of late, Hawke just has the strangeness that I feel would help to make the part. His work on ‘Sinister’ already puts him to knowing how to work with Scott Derrickson and is a good example of a slightly off character.

I suppose it’s only a matter of time before Marvel makes an official announcement. However I must ask you, fellow fans of Marvel movies, who would you like to see tackle the role and why do you think they would be a good fit for the character?

‘Doctor Strange’ is set to be directed by Scott Derrickson from a script written by Jon Spaihts.
