Last year quite a few ‘Wizard of Oz’ themed shows were announced though the one I was looking forward to most was ‘Emerald City’ which no longer appears to be happening. My hopes have melted away much like the Wicked Witch as NBC has decided to not move forward with the project after all.
As the original pitch was to take all 15 of L. Frank Baum’s ‘Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ novels, make them darker, and release them as an ongoing show it seemed like it could potentially be a good idea. Even more so when saying that it would be more similar to ‘Game of Thrones‘ than the now-classic movie that many would associate the name with.
Instead of a young girl we would have seen a 20-year-old Dorothy thrown squarely in the mix as various factions were fighting for who would control the land of Oz. There would be a highly different version of the Wizard thrown in for good measure and we would see a greater focus on the battles and politics for those vying for leadership.
NBC backed out with the announcement of a “difference in vision between NBC brass and [show co-creator Josh] Friedman about what the show would be.” While NBC is out that doesn’t necisarily mean the show is over as Universal Television still wants to put it together so we may see this announced on another network soon!
While this iteration of heading to Oz is probably out for awhile, there are others that are in the works which may be worth looking forward to. The CW having originally looked into creating ‘Dorothy Must Die‘ and CBS has a planned medical drama titled ‘Dorothy’ in the works, though I haven’t heard an update on either in quite some time.
Are you excited about the concept of a more grown up take on the ‘Wizard of Oz’? Would you have wanted to give ‘Emerald City’ a try? Share your thoughts below!
