First off, beware of SPOILERS in this article, as I will be discussing plot points from the upcoming 5th Season of  ‘Game of Thrones.’ It will be a very different season for many characters, most notably Cersei, who up till this point has always enjoyed a certain political advantage over most characters and has always had her father to shield her. With Tywin dead, she’s no longer covered, which will become a literal point on the show in Season 5.

Lena Headey has never been averse to nude scenes, but for Cersei she and the show’s producer’s have always felt it did not feel right for her character. She was always protected, always regal, never vulnerable enough to be stripped bare for the audience to see her true form. In Lena Headey’s words:

“I’ve said from day one that I’ve got no problem with nudity. I’ve done it throughout my career. But for this character, it’s been better for her regality and her feistiness to not bare her flesh until she has to. When it’s out of her control. And if that ever happens, it won’t be Cersei being seductive or sexy. She’ll be stripped. That kind of a scene will have more power if it’s not an everyday occurrence. I can’t wait for that.”

However, the time has finally come, and there is a pivotal moment in Season 5 where Cersei will indeed be stripped down in a Sept by a religious leader named the High Sparrow and forced to march in the buff through the streets of King’s Landing. It’s a cruel moment where we see how far Cersei has fallen and how little power she ever truly had.

cersei-lannisterIF we get to see that scene at all.

The small Croatian town of Dubrovnik that is used to portray King’s Landing has prevented ‘Game of Thrones’ from getting a permit to allow to film the scene as the authorities of the town have deemed it “immoral.” The authorities are the local religious leaders, the Church of St. Nicholas, and it is unclear why they have chosen to draw their line in the sand here, after 4 seasons of what could be described as “immoral” storylines.

From the whore houses to the patricide, all the way to the rapes on the streets by bitter and angry residents of King’s Landing, the Church of St. Nicholas has abided it all and said nothing. Why a nude scene with a downtrodden female character is suddenly too much for this town is beyond me, but I am very curious to see how the producers choose to handle this issue. There’s always a way in Hollywood, from mocking up the town’s streets on a backlot, to shooting a blank street and digitally inserting a naked Lena Headey after the fact. The real question is whether they buckle to the town’s demands, and if they do not, whether the town will continue allowing them to shoot there. My opinion? If Season 5 of “Game of Thrones” has to shoot at a new village, and suddenly features a King’s Landing that looks slightly different, I wouldn’t really mind at all.
