It looks as if NBC has found their John Constantine.  Matt Ryan (‘Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior’) is said to be finalizing a deal to play the roguish, quick-witted supernatural investigator.  The actor is actually Welsh, so unlike Keanu Reeves, at least he can pull off the accent.  Some may be concerned that he, like Reeves, has dark hair, but in the description it specifically calls for the character to have blond hair, so it looks like he may be bleaching it.  That can be hit or miss, so we’ll see how that turns out.

The character debuted in DC Comics’ ‘Swamp Thing’ series and proved so popular that he went on to star in the hit title ‘Hellblazer’ which was recently cancelled to make room for a more mainstream book simply titled ‘Constantine’.  He also headlines the team book ‘Justice League Dark’.

The show has a pretty impressive group of creators behind it, so it should at the very least do better than the movie.

Here is the description of the character and show:

“John Constantine is described as a working-class Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humor, and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager. When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her. The project was written by The Mentalist executive producer Daniel Cerone and David S. Goyer, the go-to writer for Warner Bros’ feature DC adaptations who has co-penned The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Batman Begins, Man Of Steel and the upcoming Batman vs. Superman.”
