About a year ago it was announced that ‘Locke And Key’ was set to become a trilogy for Universal Studios and after that not much had happened with it. Finally, with the writers behind it, Joe Hill (‘Horns‘), Robert Orci (‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2‘), and Alex Kurtzman (‘Star Trek Into Darkness”) recently tapped to reboot ‘Tales from the Darkside‘ we’re finding out that it still might be happening but that there has been a delay in production.

Why was the delay? It wasn’t the fact that the three were now working on the ‘Darkside’ reboot at all! Initially the trilogy had been shopped around as a television show that never saw the light of day. It had failed to make the air after the idea had bounced around from multiple studios from MTV to where it finally found a home at FOX. In fact FOX had gone so far as to make a pilot.

This pilot mentioned above is apparently the true cause of the delay. The live-action pilot was never aired but was filmed in 2012. According to Hill it boils down to Universal wanting “to avoid spending $25 million on a movie, and then have FOX steal their thunder by releasing a three-year-old pilot [but] FOX wants to see some coin on all the money they sank into the pilot in the first place.

He followed that up by reminding us that “the lawyers all have to validate their salaries.” However, “Alex and Bob are the two most tenacious people I’ve ever met. If anyone can see ‘Locke & Key’ through the contractual maze, and on into production, it’s them. Of course, all this could’ve been avoided if FOX had just made the series.

Hill is clearly not happy about the delay but it’s understandable as it’s his dream project that has been in development hell for years. So will we eventually see the Locke & Key trilogy? Most likely once enough posturing has been done and money has changed hands it’ll happen.

Are you still excited to see ‘Locke & Key’ happen? How long do you think it’ll be before we ever do see this comic make the big screen conversion?
