While ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ was heavily promoted at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 4’ was the topic of conversation that came up recently, there’s now talk of the movie in between the two Spidey sequels. Finally, director Marc Webb sheds a little light on the Mary Jane Watson situation for the third installment of the franchise and whether or not his original MJ will return.

Last month, it was revealed that Shailene Woodley’s small role as the iconic redhead was cut from the sequel to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ in order to streamline the story and bring more focus to the relationships that are heavily featured in the film. The ‘Divergent‘ actress opened up about the situation on multiple occasions and Webb issued a statement when the decision was made and it all sounded like everyone was set on getting someone new to play one of the most important women in Peter Parker’s life, but now that might not actually be the case.

In an interview with Collider at Comic-Con, Webb wasn’t sure if Woodley would return or not. He said, “I don’t know, she has a lot on her plate. We haven’t really crossed that bridge yet.” To see what else he had to say about Mary Jane and all things Spider-Man, check out the video below:

The filmmaker has always spoken highly of her and seemed like he would be open for her to return. Also, she probably signed a multi-picture contract when she was initially brought onto the franchise. So, while things are still murky in terms of a comeback, it seems like the idea of Woodley playing Ms. Watson in the future is still a possibility that’s on the table.

What do you think about this whole Shailene Woodley/Mary Jane Watson ordeal? Do you think that Sony will recast the role when she finally enters the narrative? Or could you see the actress’ appearance just being delayed and we’ll see her eventually beside Andrew Garfield onscreen? Share your thoughts in the comment section.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ starring Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, Chris Cooper, Paul Giamatti, Colm Feore, and Sally Field is set to hit theaters in 3D on May 2, 2014.
