One notable franchise missing from this year’s San Diego Comic-Con was ‘Star Wars’, the latest addition to the Disney stable of properties. The House of Mouse really stepped it up with Marvel for the con, but they opted to save the Lucasfilm crew for the D23 Expo, Disney’s own convention in Anaheim about three weeks away. But with Star Wars Celebration taking place this weekend, we might uncover some new information about the upcoming J.J. Abrams film that has recently started the casting process in preparation for filming to begin production early next year.

Speaking of casting, Latino Review is reporting that they have stumbled upon a very intriguing piece of casting information for ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’. According to their sources, Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron have landed roles in the first film in the new trilogy, which is meant to take place 30 years after ‘Return of the Jedi’. Both men could properly fill a few roles listed on the leaked casting breakdown, but it’s being said that the former Mouseketeer will play Luke Skywalker’s son. As for the ‘High School Musical’ star, there’s no word on which character he could be playing at this time. This wouldn’t be Efron’s first foray into the ‘Star Wars’ universe as he previously voiced Anakin Skywalker in the stop-motion comedy ‘Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode III’.

Previously, it was thought that Abrams would bring in relative unknowns and up-and-comers to fill the leads while populating the supporting roles with established stars. But if there’s any truth to this new rumor, then it looks like they’re going in a completely different direction. Keep in mind though that this should be treated as a rumor until we hear something official straight from the tauntaun’s mouth.

While we await confirmation of Gosling and Efron’s involvement in the film, what do you think about them potentially heading to a galaxy far, far away for the next chapter in the ‘Star Wars’ mythos? Do you think that the ‘Drive’ star would fit as a Skywalker offspring? What role could you see the Zefron stepping into? Share your theories in the comments.

‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ written by Michael Arndt and directed by J.J. Abrams is expected to begin production in early 2014 and hit theaters some time in 2015.
