With the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise now ended and the last of the ‘The Twilight Saga’ films to be released, studios have been looking for the next YA book series to become the next big money maker for them – after all, ‘The Hunger Games,’ will be ending after 2 more movies. Sony seems to think they have found it with Cassandra Clare’s ‘Mortal Instrument’ series and a trailer has now hit online to see if movie goers agree.

The film stars Lily Collins (‘Mirror, Mirror,’ ‘Priest’) as Clary Fray, a young girl who finds out she is a descendant of a secret group of half-angel warriors called Shadowhunters who are locked in an ancient battle to protect the world from demons. When her mother, who also happens to be a Shadowhunter, disappears, it’s up to Clary to save her mother as she joins forces and learns what it takes to follow her destiny. What she gets is an introduction to the dangerous place of Downworld, an alternate New York filled with demons, warlocks, vampire, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

The film has a rather impressive cast and boosts quite a few familiar faces which you can check out in our casting list for the film which also gives a little background for each of the characters.

The trailer has a ‘Buffy, the Vampire Slayer’ feel to it and looks like director Harald Zwart (‘The Karate Kid,’ ‘Agent Cody Banks’) may have hit the right chord for the film. While I haven’t read the book series, the trailer has convinced me to put it on my reading list. Production wrapped a few days ago, literally, so there isn’t many bells and whistles to the footage in terms of CGI but if the trailer looks this good now, image what the next one will look like!

‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones’ is not slated for release until August 23, 2013, so we’ll just have to wait awhile to see how close the film is to the book. As there are 6 novels to the series, expect to see more ‘The Mortal Instruments’ movies if ‘City of Bones’ fares well.
