Besides the film ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,’ the next YA lit-to-movie news that a lot of people are closing watching is who’s playing the roles in the film ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.’ Since casting has been a long and arduous process with this film (after all, the first casting announcement was made nearly 2 years ago!), we’ve decide to put them all together in one spot.

The movie doesn’t hit theaters until next year but industry insiders are anticipating that this may be a franchise that can fill the supernatural fantasy void that will be left once the final installment of ‘The Twilight Saga’ is released.

The series encompasses six books, giving filmmakers plenty of material if their first movie does well with audiences. Sony and Screen Gems have already set up a nice website for the film which indicate that the majority of the roles have been cast with only 2 parts (werewolf Alaric and vampire Rafael Santiago) left to fill.

Here’s a synopsis of the first book followed by the cast of characters:

‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,’ set in contemporary New York City, a seemingly ordinary teenager, Clary Fray, discovers she is the descendant of a line of Shadowhunters, a secret cadre of young half-angel warriors locked in an ancient battle to protect our world from demons.  After the disappearance of her mother, Clary must join forces with a group of Shadowhunters, who introduce her to a dangerous alternate New York called Downworld, filled with demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves and other deadly creatures.

Cast:

Lily Collins as Clary Fray

Clary Fray is a fiery-natured, red-headed young artist who lives with her mother Jocelyn in Brooklyn. Clary has lived most of her life as an ordinary girl, unaware of her family’s past or her mother’s Shadowhunter nature. Until she meets Jace Wayland.

Jamie Campbell Bower as Jace Wayland

Since the death of his father when he was ten, Jace — young, handsome, and the best Shadowhunter of his generation — has lived in the Institute with his adoptive family, the Lightwoods. He has a strong moral code despite his tendency to break rules and seek adventure.

Robert Sheehan as Simon Lewis

Simon’s a mousy  brown-haired 16-year-old who plays the bass in a band. He’s also Clary’s best friend who gets dragged into her mess and has to reap the consequences.

Jemima West as Isabelle Lightwood

This tall, raven haired Shadowhunter is very fashion conscious and beautiful. Isabelle has a passion for sharp weapons, runes and all other accoutrements of demon hunting. Alec, Jace and Isabelle make a lethal team. While somewhat of an elitist when it comes to humans, at heart Isabelle is caring and loyal.

Kevin Zegers as Alec Lightwood

Alec is Isabelle’s older brother and a resident of the New York Institute. However, any similarity Alec and Isabelle share in appearance, they lack in personality. Alec is very serious and uncomfortable around outsiders, while Isabelle is more of an extrovert.

Lena Headey as Jocelyn Fray

Jocelyn makes her living as an artist, working from her two-story brownstone apartment in Brooklyn. While she enjoys her craft, Jocelyn is primarily interested in the well-being of her daughter, Clary – and keeping her Shadowhunter nature secret.

Aidan Turner as Luke Garroway

Luke is a devoted friend of Jocelyn Fray and the closest thing to a father Clary has ever known. While Luke and Jocelyn are not officially a couple, Luke has always secretly loved her and dedicated his life to protecting her and her daughter. Or so Clary thinks.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers as Valentine Morgenstern

Valentine is a powerful Shadowhunter. Brilliant and handsome, he was once the leader of an exclusive group of warriors known as The Circle. Due to his radical agenda — wipe out all Downworlders and leave the humans of the world to die unprotected from demons — Valentine is a common enemy of Downworlders and Shadowhunters alike.

CCH Pounder as Madame Dorothea

Dorothea is the proprietor of Madame Dorothea, Seeress and Prophetess, a psychic shop in the brownstone shared with Jocelyn and Clary Fray.  She’s tough as nails and not what she seems.

Godfrey Gao as Magnus Bane

A High Warlock that likes to party and is very flamboyant. Similar to Captain Jack in the ‘Torchwood’ series, he is considered omnisexual as he once tells Alex, “I’ve been with men, been with women – with faeries and warlocks and vampires, and even a djinn or two.”

Jared Harris as Hodge Starkweather

An exiled tutor to the Lightwood children, Starkweather is neither all good nor all bad. He’s brilliant but was led down the wrong path a long time ago and now must suffer the consequences. He is stricken with a moral dilemma in the film.

Kevin Duran as Emil Panborn and Robert Maillet as Samuel Blackwell

Two of Valentine’s henchmen who do Valentine’s biddig.

Stephen R. Hart as Brother Jeremiah

With no eyes and  indent where they should be, his mouth sewn shut, Brother Jeremiah is one of the Silent Brothers who Hodge Starkweather calls upon to help Clary.

There you have it! The cast of ‘The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.’ Filming is set to begin next month with a release date for the film on August 23, 2013
