Fans have been wondering what would become of 20th Century Fox’s ‘X-Men’ movie franchise now that the company has been bought by Disney, but for the time being, it appears that things are business as usual. Fox has ‘The New Mutants’ coming out in April to be followed by ‘Deadpool 2’ in June and ‘X-Men: Dark Phoenix’ closing out the year in November. We have also learned that Drew Goddard’s ‘X-Force’ movie is still in the works and now comes word that a rather unexpected entry is also in development– a solo ‘Kitty Pryde’ movie, directed by Tim Miller, who helmed the first ‘Deadpool’.
Ellen Page portrayed this mutant in ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’. While Kitty Pryde has always been a popular character in the comics, her role in the films has been fairly small, although she did play a pivotal part in ‘Days of Future Past’ as the mutant responsible for sending Wolverine’s psyche back in time to prevent their dystopian Sentinel-ruled world from coming into being. Of course, it’s unknown if the ‘Kitty Pryde’ movie will feature the same version of the character, or if this will be a new take.
Time-twisting aside, Kitty Pryde’s most notable superpower is her ability to “phase” through solid matter. If she phases through an electronic device, she disrupts its functioning and by adjusting her density just right, she can essentially walk on air. When she first joined the X-Men in ‘Uncanny X-Men’ #129 (1980), during the legendary ‘Dark Phoenix Saga’, she went by the codename Sprite. She later briefly went by Ariel and then Shadowcat. Despite having so many monikers, most fans simply refer to her by her real name.
Despite her popularity as a member of the team, she’s never been much of a headliner, so the idea of her getting her own movie is rather startling. Of course, just because Miller is developing the movie is no guarantee that it will get made. A previous version of ‘X-Force’ was actively developed before being scrapped. When ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ was released, there were plans for similar ‘Origins’ movies for Magneto and Storm, as well as spin-offs featuring that film’s version of Deadpool and Gambit as portrayed by Taylor Kitsch. None of those materialized (except ‘Deadpool’, kind of), so a ‘Kitty Pryde’ movie isn’t a done deal, especially considering the Disney buyout.
