Tom Cruise has been on quite a science fiction roll lately with last year’s ‘Oblivion’ and this summer’s upcoming ‘Edge of Tomorrow’.  The apocalyptic thriller pits the mecha-armored human army against invading alien forces, with Cruise portraying Bill Cage, a military man who has never seen a moment of combat and as a result finds himself dead within moments of being deployed against these invaders.  The twist is that Cage gets reborn every time he is killed, taking him back to the point where he showed up for work that first day.  Eventually he encounters Rita Vrantaski played by Emily Blunt (‘Looper‘, ‘Into the Woods‘) who may hold the key to explaining his bizarre predicament.

The movie has been explained as being like a science fiction/action movie spin on ‘Groundhog’s Day’ and that seems somewhat accurate, by way of ‘Starship Troopers’ and ‘Source Code’.  As (the same) day after day goes by, it appears that Cage goes from worthless newbie to badass alien-killing machine.

The movie is based on the manga ‘All You Need is Kill‘ by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and that was the original title of the movie, but things have evolved along the way.
