To say that we’re excited for ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ is an understatement but details have been sparse on this new series, however, executive producer Bryan Fuller has just dropped a couple of hints about the show. While we know the series will t take place in the Prime timeline (before the 2009 ‘Star Trek’ created the alternate Kelvin timeline where all of the new films are now set in), we have no clue when in that timeline it will actually take place. Rumors have it placed in various points of The Original Series run but now it looks as if it may take place prior to Kirk helming The Enterprise.
When asked when ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ could take place, Fuller drops this big hint:
“There’s a big clue in the number of the ship [NCC-1031] that indicates when we’re set.”
The first Enterprise is NCC-1701 which makes it appear that this could be set prior to Kirk’s five-year mission. While it could just be a different class of ship, I have a feeling that the 1031 model will be piloted before the 1701 ships.
Of course, the next thing that they point out is that it ends with 31 and there is a question as to if this could have any connections to Starfleet’s covert Section 31 which deals with the black ops for The Federation and is so secretive that most of those in charge are unaware of its existence. As Fuller explains:
“There are aspects of our first season that, depending on how well versed you are in that mythology, you could either read into it a connection or not.”
Vague, but it could mean that we’ll be seeing some spycraft in the background of whatever story is being told here. When you take into mind that on ‘Enterprise’ the ship was NX-01 and ‘Star Trek: TOS’ had it at NCC-1701 with progression being NCC-74656 in ‘Star Trek: Voyager’ the ship numbers are just going up aside from those which are new generations of older ships we seen before such as the NCC-1701D in ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’.
Thankfully Fuller will “spoiler it up” on August 10th for Star Trek’s Television Critics Association panel so we’ll be discovering a lot more about the series in the upcoming weeks.
