Some may say that the ‘X-Men’ movie franchise is back in track. With director Bryan Singer and writer Simon Kinberg on board with Fox’s Marvel mutant films, there’s a bright future ahead for Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, and the rest of the team, especially since ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ has grossed over $500 million worldwide. But what about the other projects connected to this cinematic universe that were announced prior to the release of the latest installment, like ‘X-Force’? Well, according to prominent comic creator Rob Liefeld, things have come to a halt on that front.

Previously, ‘Kick-Ass 2’ director Jeff Wadlow was developing the script for a film adaptation of the classic X-team from the 90s created by Fabian Nicieza and Rob Liefeld. With characters like Warpath, Bishop, Colossus, and Sunspot appearing in the most recent chapter of the X-Men saga, it would be easy to bring them all together with Cable and Deadpool and whoever else would be included in this version of the team after ‘Days of Future Past’. However, Liefeld seems to think that because of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’, which was teased in the post-credits of the new take on the classic Chris Claremont story, ‘X-Force’ has been disrupted. When asked about the current state of spinoff, he tweeted the following:

With ‘Apocalypse’ set for a 2016 release date, it’s safe to assume that ‘X-Force’ was likely pushed back to reflect the new direction of the franchise, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing. Though he doesn’t believe that Cable will appear in next ‘X-Men’ movie, it’s possible that they could introduce him and then spinoff from there, similar to what is rumored to be the plan for Channing Tatum’s Gambit. Also, people have made it pretty clear that Fox intends to expand their Marvel properties into a larger universe, so chances are that this new team will appear onscreen sooner rather than later even if that means that it has to come after ‘Apocalypse’.

Even though it’s likely that Liefeld is kept in the know when it comes to projects based on his creations, it’s better to take this information with a grain of salt since it’s far from official. Regardless, what do you think of the situation? Do you think that the tweet means that ‘X-Force’ is no longer on the books because of ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’? Or does it sound like it’s simply been pushed back? Share your thoughts and theories in the comments below.
