You “can’t spell space without spa,” and that is what the ship in ‘Avenue 5’ is all about. Now, audiences can see more of this concept in the latest trailer for the upcoming HBO series. This sci-fi comedy is from Armando Iannucci, the creator of ‘Veep,’ and we now know that the series will be launching on January 19th, 2020, on HBO at 10/9C.
From his time on ‘House M.D.,’ I was already a massive fan of Hugh Laurie and seeing him in an HBO comedy series set in space had my attention even before the first trailer. This new look at the series has me even more sold that we’re going to be in for a goofy good time.
Recently, the network also revealed a slightly updated short-synopsis for the series which you can read here:
Set 40 years in the future, Avenue 5 follows the captain and crew of a luxury space cruise ship as they navigate disgruntled passengers and unexpected events after experiencing technical difficulties onboard.

The latest trailer shows a bit more how these “technical difficulties” mentioned in the synopsis will directly impact the crew and vacation-goers aboard the ‘Avenue 5.’ Not only that, but the humor is more on display than the first preview and I suspect this gives a better feel for the tone of the show. Joining Laurie on the series will be Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Lenora Crichlow, Suzy Nakamura, and Nikki Amuka-Bird.
Thankfully, the series has still been moving steadily forward even when shooting had to halt on the final two episodes after a massive fire destroyed much of the set earlier this year.
