Hugh Laurie

Ever since ‘House M.D.’ we’ve been hoping to see more of Hugh Laurie (‘Chance’,’The Night Manager’) on television or film and now he is heading into genre work with a sci-fi comedy titled ‘Avenue 5.’ This new series will debut on HBO and is being brought to us by Armando Iannucci, the creator of ‘Veep.’ The actor had a recurring guest role as part of the cast for ‘Veep’ as Tom James for a couple of years so the two already have a great working relationship that will hopefully only blossom as this series moves forward.

Not much is known about ‘Avenue 5’ at this time, but it is set mostly in space and at some point in the future. Laurie’s character is Ryan Clark who is described as “the charming and in-control American captain of the Avenue 5.” Iannucci both created the series and will serve as it’s Executive Producer as well. While he likely won’t have any traces of the sarcastic humor from ‘House M.D.’ that made him famous, fans can only hope that part of that persona could return!

At this time, the pilot for the show had been ordered in September of 2017 and had just moved into the phase of pre-production where we know that it will shoot in London at some point this year.

This won’t be Laurie’s first outing into genre work having previously starred in Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland‘ though the film didn’t resonate with audiences. As a huge fan of the actor, I’m hoping that this one will work out better for him!

Are you looking forward to checking out ‘Avenue 5’ when it lands on HBO? Do you feel that we’ll see a new side of Hugh Laurie’s acting or will he have traces of any of his previous roles as part of his character? Share your thoughts below!
