What probably is the best part of Disney+’s ‘The Mandalorian‘ is Baby Yoda. Yes, the bounty hunter lifestyle is amazing to explore and the series gives us insight into the type of people who would hang out in a “wretched hive of scum and villainy.” Yes, we’re finally getting to see more worlds in a galaxy far, far away. Yes, we’re getting a longer form story set in the realm of “Star Wars.” But let’s be honest – it really is all about Baby Yoda.
As we all know, “Star Wars” is all about merchandising, so when the cutest thing to hit “Star Wars” since the Ewoks was revealed, you might be wondering when you can pick up your first toys based on the character. The answer is… not too soon.
According to showrunner Jon Favreau:
“I have to thank Disney and Lucasfilm, because the way the cat usually gets out of the bag with that stuff is merchandising and toy catalogs and things like that. So they really back us up. We really wanted to have it be that you had to watch it yourself, so that every time you watch the show, there are new twists and secrets that come out. That requires a lot of restraint from the people who are footing the bill, saying they’re gonna hold back on certain things so that the public doesn’t know ahead of time. Part of that was holding back on some of the merchandise and holding back on some of the characters.”
While there’s no doubt the studio is going to make a mint on Baby Yoda, they were willing to hold back on toys, plushes, and other merchandise to keep the character’s introduction a surprise.
