Auliʻi Cravalho Is Set To Co-Star In Amazon's The Power
NBC

Fresh off her role as Ariel in ‘The Little Mermaid Live!’, Auliʻi Cravalho has been cast to star opposite Leslie Mann in Amazon’s 10-episode miniseries ‘The Power’, based on Naomi Alderman’s bestselling feminist science fiction novel.  ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’s Reed Morano developed the series with Leslie Mann.  Morano will direct and Mann is attached to star, while both are serving as executive producers along with Alderman, who herself is working on the scripts, with an all-female writer’s room including Whit Anderson (‘Ozark’), Stacy Osei-Kuffour (‘Watchmen‘), and Rebecca Levene (the video game ‘Rogue Warrior’).

Cravalho will play Jos, the daughter of Mann’s character, Margot Cleary-Lopez.  ‘The Power’ is set in a world where teenage girls gain the ability to electrocute others at will.

It’s hereditary, it’s inbuilt, and it can’t be taken away from them. Coming alive to the thrill of pure power: the ability to hurt or even kill by releasing electrical jolts from their fingertips, they rapidly learn they can awaken the Power in older women. Soon enough nearly every woman in the world can do it. And then everything is different. (Via Deadline)

The novel is something of an anthology, which follows various women through this reality.  Among the other characters are Allie, “a vulnerable American foster kid who reinvents herself as a faith leader”; Roxy, “the daughter of a London crime boss, who revels in her new abilities”; Tunde, “a Nigerian journalist reporting on seismic global change”; and Margot Cleary-Lopez (Mann), Mayor of Seattle; “loving wife and doting mother to three kids. At least that’s what her official campaign website would tell you.”

Cravalho’s Jos and her father feel the effects as Cleary-Lopez’s career soars.  For one, “where previously there was conflict now comes a greater understanding, and for the other where there was love, comes hurt and betrayal.”

Cravalho’s portrayal of Ariel in last week’s successful ‘The Little Mermaid Live’, came after her rise to fame as the voice of the titular character in ‘Moana’.  (She reprised the role in ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’.)  She co-starred on the NBC series ‘Rise’, appeared in Youtube’s anthology series ‘Weird City’, and is currently filming the Netflix movie ‘Sorta Like a Rockstar’.
