The CW Orders Full Seasons For Batwoman And Nancy Drew
The CW

Two new crimefighters are sticking around a bit longer.  The CW has ordered full seasons for two of its freshmen series, ‘Batwoman’ and ‘Nancy Drew’.  That adds nine episodes to the 13 that were already ordered for each, bringing them both to a total of 22.  Three episodes of each have aired, so this indicates that those have performed pretty well.  Actually, ‘Batwoman’ currently ranks as the network’s second-best-rated series after ‘The Flash’.

In a sign of the times, both shows pad their ratings with impressive increases thanks to delayed viewing.  Within seven days of the episode airing on TV, streamed viewing (mainly via the free CW app) increases ‘Batwoman’s ratings 73% among adults 18-34, and 80% among adults 18-49.  ‘Nancy Drew’ increases by 94% with adults 18-34 and 114% with adults 18-49.  So more people are watching this show streaming than on TV.

These are the first two CW shows to arrive after the end of its streaming deal with Netflix, which allows The CW to offer the entire season of ‘Batwoman’ and ‘Nancy Drew’ on its free streaming platforms rather than just the five most recent episodes, which it had been limited to in the past.

‘Batwoman’ stars Ruby Rose as Bruce Wayne’s lesbian cousin who takes over as the defender of Gotham City three years after Bruce and Batman mysteriously vanished.  The series is part of the larger DC “Arrowverse” along with ‘The Flash’, ‘Arrow’, ‘Supergirl’, and ‘Legends of Tomorrow’.  (‘Black Lightning’ is unattached, but that may change with December’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”)  ‘Batwoman’ airs on Sunday nights, before ‘Supergirl’.  Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang, Camrus Johnson, Elizabeth Anweis, and Dougray Scott also star.

‘Nancy Drew’ is a modern reinvention of the literary teen sleuth whose exploits have been published for nearly 90 years, written by various authors using the pseudonym Carolyn Keene.  Kennedy McMann stars in the title role.  Unlike the source novels, on the TV series, the ghosts and supernatural menaces are real!  The cast of ‘Nancy Drew’ also includes Leah Lewis, Maddison Jaizani, Tunji Kasim, Alex Saxon, Alvina August, Riley Smith, and Scott Wolf.  ‘Nancy Drew’ airs on Wednesday nights, after ‘Riverdale’.
