Edge Of Tomorrow / Live Die Repeat
Warner Brothers/Village Roadshow Pictures

Are you ready to repeat the experience of ‘Live Die Repeat’?  Doug Liman hopes so.  The director says the script for the sequel is ready to go, and that he hopes to film it once star Tom Cruise completes the next two ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies.  Liman admitted as much when speaking to ComicBookMovie.com.  When asked if he would tackle this project upon the completion of the ‘Mission: Impossible’ pics, he replied:

“I’m hoping. If we’re going to do it, that would be the time.”

In March of this year, it was revealed that Matthew Robinson was tackling the screenplay.  Liman added:

“Yeah, the script is ready.”

Warner Brothers and Village Roadshow Pictures may wish they could “Live Die Repeat” with this movie, as they kind of botched its release, mostly when it came to naming the film.  This sci-fi flick, released in 2014, was based on the Japanese light novel ‘All You Need Is Kill’ by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, and operated under that name through production, but once Liman had completed the film, he decided to change the name to ‘Live Die Repeat’.  Warner Brothers felt differently, and gave it the soap opera-like title ‘Edge of Tomorrow’.  That weak title failed to sell the movie and it was a flop at the box office.  When it was released on home video, its name was changed again, to ‘Live Die Repeat’.

At that point, viewers checked it out and realized it was actually a good movie.  Tom Cruise starred as Major William Cage, a soldier with no combat experience, who is forced to take part in a battle against alien invaders.  He is promptly killed, but finds himself stuck in a ‘Groundhog’s Day’-like time loop, forced to relive the experience over and over.  Each time he dies, he pops back to the start of the battle, but retains the knowledge he gathers with each life.  Emily Blunt co-starred.

The movie– whatever it’s called– has gained a cult following who have clamored for a sequel for years.  Liman has remained hopeful ever since, and it sounds as though things may pay off soon.

In the meantime, Cruise has continued to score with the highly successful ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchise.  In January of this year, it was reported that the seventh and eighth movies in the franchise would film back-to-back to be released in 2021 and 2022.  Filming has not begun, but it should soon, and should take about a year.

Liman is hoping to snag Cruise at that point, but will the now 57-year-old star be up for a third action movie in a row, especially considering that one of the main draws for the ‘M:I’ films is the fact that he does most of his own stunts?  Production on ‘M:I — Fallout’ had to be paused for nine weeks after Cruise broke his ankle performing a stunt.  Who knows how he’s going to injure himself on not one, but two of these pictures in a row?!

If he’s in one piece, Cruise may decide he wants to do a nice calm drama next.  Then what?  Keep your fingers crossed, if you’re a fan and want to see a sequel to ‘Live Die Repeat’/’Edge of Tomorrow’.
