J.J. Abrams Shared Why Emperor Palpatine Returns For 'Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker'

The absolute stand out and spine-chilling moment from the ‘Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker‘ trailer was the laugh of Emperor Palpatine at the end of it. The overall response to Ian McDiarmid returning as the character has had “Star Wars” fans thrilled but some have been unsure how he’ll be back having been killed by Darth Vader in ‘Star Wars: Episode IX: Return of the Jedi.’ However, from the Empire’s love of cloning and Force Ghosts being all the rage, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the ultimate Dark Lord of the Sith would find a way back for the final outing of The Skywalker Saga.

As to his inclusion, director J.J. Abrams explained:

“Some people feel like we shouldn’t revisit the idea of Palpatine, and I completely understand that. But if you’re looking at these nine films as one story, I don’t know many books where the last few chapters have nothing to do with those that have come before. If you look at the first eight films, all the set-ups of what we’re doing in IX are there in plain view.”

We’ve had teases of the Sith being able to cheat death thanks to the mention of Darth Plagueis in the prequel trilogy and some of the canon Marvel Comics. With this in mind, this return doesn’t feel entirely out of the realm of possibility. However, by this logic, it also feels that Darth Vader should be returning in some capacity as the first six movies could easily be seen as the fall of Anakin Skywalker and his redemption, from a certain point of view.
