Golden Globe and Academy Award winner Lady Gaga has reportedly been offered a role in the big-screen remake of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ and according to a source, “She’s very interested to keep acting.”  Greg Berlanti (‘Love, Simon’) is heading up the reboot, having co-penned the screenplay with an eye to direct.

We already know that Gaga is interested in carrying on with her acting career, especially after she has proven so successful at it.  She won the Golden Globe for her role as The Countess on Ryan Murphy’s ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’.  She was nominated for Lead Actress for the Golden Globes and Academy Awards for ‘A Star is Born’, however, she didn’t take home those prizes, although she won both for her song ‘Shallow’.

Last year, at the Critics’ Choice Awards, she declared:

“I will definitely continue acting.  I love acting. I loved acting on ‘American Horror Story’ as the Countess for Ryan Murphy, and I loved acting in ‘A Star is Born’ for Bradley Cooper. It was a tremendous experience, and I want to continue to do more, but I am a bit spoiled. I’ve had some fantastic directors and fantastic visionaries.”

‘Little Shop of Horrors’ began as a black and white non-musical horror movie in 1960, but was turned into a hit Broadway musical 1983, then a hit movie in 1986.  That is probably the best-known iteration.  Frank Oz directed that film version, bringing his puppetry expertise to the creation of massive carnivorous plant Audrey II.  Rick Moranis as awkward flower shop employee, Seymour Krelborn, with Ellen Green (who originated the role on stage) as his co-worker/crush Audrey and Steve Martin as Audrey’s sadistic and abusive boyfriend, dentist Orin Scrivello.  Both the stage and film versions featured music by Alan Menken, with lyrics by Howard Ashman.

Not much is known about the remake, beyond the fact that Berlanti is working on it.  In 2017, it was rumored that Josh Gad and Rebel Wilson were going to star, but Berlanti refuted that.  Presumably, Gaga is being courted to play Audrey.  But who knows?  Maybe they want her to voice Audrey II or maybe they’re taking a radical twist with this remake.

A stage revival is set to hit off-Broadway, with previews taking place now, and the show officially opening on October 17.  Jonathan Groff stars as Seymour.

How would you feel about seeing and hearing Lady Gaga in an update of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’?
