Terminator: Dark Fate

It sounds like the T-800 which Arnold Schwarzenegger is playing in ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ is going to have audiences highly conflicted. It has already been made clear that he isn’t reprising the role of the T-800 from ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ so the emotional connection to his character won’t quite be the same. While the previews for the film has made it clear that he’ll be helping those who are trying to prevent another form of Judgement Day from occurring, it sounds like we won’t be rooting for him the entire time.

So why will we be conflicted as to how we feel about the character if he is helping our heroes? According to Schwarzenegger in a recent interview:

“There are moments [in Dark Fate] where you kind of feel sorry for Terminator, for the T-800. It’s like, ‘I hope he gets destroyed, but I hope he wins against this.”

We’ll obviously be rooting for him to help the survivors, but what is going to make us all think “I hope he gets destroyed.” Well, I have a theory about that.

We know that Mackenzie Davis’s Grace is initially thrown at seeing a Terminator. On top of this, in the most recent trailer, Linda Hamilton‘s Sarah Connor has outright stated that she plans to kill the T-800 when everything is said and done.

It feels personal that Sarah wants him dead. The one factor not brought up here is that Edward Furlong is said to be reprising his role as John Connor. However, the actor hasn’t popped up in any of the promotional material so far. This could lead to the fact that either his role isn’t that significant to the film, or, perhaps he will only be showing up in a flashback. This T-800 may have tried to save John and failed which would have Sarah still holding a grudge against him.

The latest movie is a direct sequel to ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’ and is striking the rest of the films from canon. With this in mind, Sarah’s actions in the last movie may have prevented John from being vital to humanity, pushing back against the machines.

Only time will tell.

Why do you think we’ll have conflicted emotions over the T-800 which Arnold Schwarzenegger is playing in ‘Terminator: Dark Fate’? Do you believe that John Connor will be alive in this film? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
