Silver Surfer Movie May Be In The Works At Marvel Studios

The herald of Galactus will be heading to theatres sometime in the future. Revealed by Geeks Worldwide, an unnamed source has stated that Marvel Studios is currently developing a Silver Surfer film for the silver screen. This is, of course, thanks to Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the company that held the film rights to many popular Marvel characters.

The Silver Surfer made his first appearance fifty-three years ago in ‘The Fantastic Four’ #48 courtesy of the legendary Jack Kirby. Sporting silver skin and a likewise themed surfboard, the being once known as Norrin Radd struck a deal with the world-devourer Galactus. In return for sparing his planet, Radd would become the herald for the planet eater. Thus embued with the Power Cosmic, the Surfer would travel the galaxy in search of planets perfect for Galactus’s appetite.

Given that Marvel Studios has shown a great amount of competency when showing the more otherworldly aspects of the comic books, Silver Surfer could be a great jumping-off point to take the movies in a much more interesting direction. Those moviegoers who may be tired of the more pedestrian superheroes may be reinvigorated by seeing the Power Cosmic on full display. Not to mention the chance of seeing Galactus properly represented.

As far as who will be in creative control of the project, ‘Ant-Man’ co-writer Adam McKay had expressed interest in the project last year stating:

“Silver Surfer is the one I want to do, man. I would do anything to do Silver Surfer because, visually, you could do what the Wachowskis did with Speed Racer with the Silver Surfer.”

Kevin Feige could go out on a limb on this one and take a few chances when it comes to directors. What worked for James Gunn and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ may not jive with something as out there as the Surfer and the Celestials. Maybe bring in ‘Trainspotting’ director Danny Boyle?
