Hugo Awards

The 2019 Hugo Awards have been handed out at this year’s Dublin 2019: An Irish Worldcon, the 77th World Science Fiction Convention.  These awards are mainly focused on publishing, with awards for Best Novel, as well as for Fanzines, podcasts and everything in between.  Mary Robinette Kowal’s ‘The Calculating Stars’ won for Best Novel, while Martha Wells’ “Artificial Condition” won for Best Novella.  Best Short Story went to “A Witch’s Guide to Escape: A Practical Compendium of Portal Fantasies” by Alix E. Harrow.

As far as mass media, in a bit of an upset, animated hit ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ won for Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form, besting ‘Annihilation’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Black Panther’, ‘A Quiet Place’, and ‘Sorry to Bother You’.

The NBC sitcom ‘The Good Place’ won for its episode “Janet(s)” in which co-star D’Arcy Carden was called upon to play the show’s other characters.  It beat another episode of ‘The Good Place’, “Jeremy Bearamy,” along with two episodes of ‘Doctor Who’“Demons of the Punjab” and “Rosa”, ‘The Expanse’ episode “Abaddon’s Gate,” and Janelle Monáe’s extended video album, “Dirty Computer.”

Best Graphic Story went to Image Comics’ ‘Monstress, Volume 3: Haven’, written by Marjorie Liu with art by Sana Takeda.
