Y (The Last Man)

FX’s adaptation ‘Y’ based on Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra’s comic book ‘Y: The Last Man’ has had quite a struggle coming to the small screen.  In April, showrunners Aïda Mashaka Croal and Michael Green stepped down due to creative differences.  In June, it was announced that Eliza Clark (‘Animal Kingdom’, ‘Extant’, ‘The Killing’) had replaced them.  Since then, there hasn’t been much news, but Vaughan just revealed:

“The show must go on!  I’m very pleased to say the series is in excellent hands with new showrunner Eliza Clark and her intimidating squad of all-stars. TV is goddamn hard, and if the last 17 years have taught co-creator Pia Guerra and me anything, it’s that our story is particularly challenging to adapt, so I’m very grateful to everyone who’s helped get Yorick & Co. this far, especially Michael Green and Aïda Croal. Anyway, stay tuned, very good (monkey) shit coming your way soon.”

Vaughan and Guerra’s comic book series ran from 2002-08 and an adaptation of some sort has been in the works since 2007.  It was originally eyed as a potential film, or film series.  (Which would have been terrible.)  FX’s television adaptation has been in the works since 2015, but has only started to make traction in the last couple of years.  This version will only be known as ‘Y’.

HBO

The storyline follows Yorick Brown who discovers that he and his pet monkey Ampersand are the last males left on Earth.  Barry Keoghan, who was most recently seen in HBO’s acclaimed ‘Chernobyl’, will portray Yorick.  Diane Lane will portray his mother, Senator Jennifer Brown, while Imogen Poots will play his sister, Hero.  Lashana Lynch has the leading female role as Agent 355, whose job is to keep Yorick alive.  Lynch was seen as Maria Rambeau in ‘Captain Marvel’ and is rumored to be taking over the role of Agent 007 in the upcoming ‘Bond 25’.

Juliana Canfield portrays Yorick’s girlfriend Beth, and the cast also includes Marin Ireland as Nora, Amber Tamblyn as Mariette Callows, and Timothy Hutton as the U.S. President.  The role of Doctor Allison Mann has not yet been cast, but in the books, she is the third lead, along with Yorick and Agent 355.

The pilot for ‘Y’ has been shot, but it’s unclear if any more episodes have been filmed, but it doesn’t look like it.  FX had planned for ‘Y’ to premiere in 2020, but once again, it’s unclear if that still holds true.  Consider that information among the “very good (monkey) shit coming your way soon.”  (It’s also unclear how Lynch’s sudden high profile might impact the show.  Will 355 have to be recast?)
