The third episode of Epix‘s ‘Pennyworth‘ is poised to have audiences, and Thomas Wayne, meet Batman’s future mother – Martha Kane. In a new clip from the episode, which is titled “Martha Kane” after her name, we get to finally see the woman who Thomas will fall madly in love with. The character is played by Emma Paetz (‘Gentleman Jack’) who is described as “a mysterious American operative who enlists Alfred’s help in a complicated mission.”
Obviously, this won’t be the only time we see her this season. Actor Ben Aldridge, who plays Batman’s future father on the series states:
“He’s one half of what goes in to become Batman, that’s been a really great thing reading the scripts. And Martha Kane is a huge part of the show as well as it progresses, so its the beginnings and the sparks of their chemistry and how they meet as well. So that’s been an exciting thing to read and be part of.”

Well, she looks like she’ll be fun to have on the show!
Just like ‘Gotham,’ it feels that we’re really getting a unique telling of Batman’s origin story. Only, as we all know, this one is set well before Bruce is born and has to do with how Alfred Pennyworth comes into the life of the Waynes.
Producer Danny Cannon goes on to stress how important the meeting of Thomas and Martha are to the season and why their chemistry will be important for how Batman will eventually evolve:
“Arguably Batman is a very schizophrenic messed up guy, but Martha and Thomas are both sides of him. The DNA is right there. The way that they clash together, the way the sparks fly, the way that they’re angry at each other sometimes. They have completely different ideals and different beliefs. But together, if those things merge, it could be really special.”
