Greg Russo is building up quite a pedigree of video game adaptations and is chiming in that one of his upcoming films, ‘Space Invaders’ had to “subvert expectations” for him to be involved. The original game has almost no actual plot to speak of with a group of aliens invading the planet, and you as a lone warrior are shooting up at them. There is no great story about the aliens or you as humanity’s hero and not much of a basis to build a cohesive story off of.
That being said, the game holds a special place in his heart:
“Space Invaders was the first game I ever played. I was, my dad brought home an Atari 2600, we didn’t have a lot of money. So it was really it was exciting to get an Atari 2600, and that was the first, it was the only game we had. I played the Hell out of that thing.
So for me, that was my introduction to gaming, and I think for a lot of people it was one of the real, what’s the word? I guess it was like the Godfather of gaming, you know, that was what started so many different things. That it created so many trends. From even just shooting at anything before that, you didn’t even have an automatic gun and firing it at an approaching enemy. I mean, just to think of how many things it started, but it’s good.”
While Russo has an emotional investment to the game, that still doesn’t translate into the story. In fact, the writer was hesitant to even think about the film with how many alien invasion movies he has seen over the year. However, after months of working on it, Russo believes that he has come up with a unique idea for the story:
“I didn’t want to even consider it if I couldn’t bring something new to it. If I couldn’t find a way to subvert expectations for something like that, then it didn’t interest me. So, I mean I sat on it for a long time, I would say off and on for about six months until I finally found a way to crack it in a fun way that when you see the trailer for it, you’d be like, Holy Shit. Like I never would’ve thought that. But that’s really an awesome way to approach that property. So we’ll see. Still early days.”
While it sounds like the script is nowhere near completion, I am interested as to what this unique idea could be. Russo still has the ‘Mortal Kombat‘ and ‘Resident Evil’ reboots on his plate before this one so I’m not sure how quick we’ll get an update, but we’ll be watching out for it.
Are you at all excited for a ‘Space Invaders’ film? What direction do you think Greg Russo can possibly take the plot to “subvert expectations” of what the movie will end up being about? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
