One of my favorite events from San Diego Comic-Con 2019 took place right outside the Convention Center, more or less in the backyard of the convention. It was ‘Adult Swim On the Green,’ where the people behind Adult Swim set up a small Carnival for folks to hang out while they had trailers, promos, and a few show premieres and previews playing on the main stage and the big screen overlooking the carnival. The event had a souvenir shop, food stalls (including a particularly excellent donuts shop that one of my friends could not get enough of), but best of all for me, were the two main events we attended there.
First off was a preview of Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Primal Time’ series, which looks to be an epic animated show that should live up to the standard of Tartakovsky’s previous work, which included such favorites as ‘Samurai Jack’ and ‘The Clone Wars’ (the original 2D shorts, not the full length 3D episodes produced by George Lucas). The episode was thrilling, surprising, shocking at multiple moments, with various people in the audience gasping in surprise at some of the violence or heartbreak. It all-around delivered a pretty amazing introduction to the new series from such a master at the animated craft, with an ending that might have felt a bit cliched in the hands of anyone else, but felt epic and well-deserved thanks to the proceeding episode Tartakovski delivered.
Following that was a concert put on by the band Anamanaguchi, whose unique chiptune sound brought a phenomenal energy to the greens outside the convention center. They played a full set for everyone in attendance, even coming back for an encore where they played ‘Scott Pilgrim,’ a fan-favorite song of the band. Amidst the high-tempo video-game inspired music, fans were treated to swag bags from Adult Swim which included red glow-sticks, which made the whole event feel even more like a party.
