Steven Universe: The Movie

‘Steven Universe’ is making a huge jump two years into the future, for the upcoming musical movie.  Steven is looking forward to kicking back and relaxing with his friends, but danger threatens with the arrival of a stretchy, clownish foe with designs to destroy all life on Earth, including people.

“Steven thinks his time defending the Earth is over, but when a new threat comes to Beach City, Steven faces his biggest challenge yet.”

Series creator Rebecca Sugar has been teasing the musical ‘Steven Universe’ movie for over a year, and it’s finally set to arrive on Cartoon Network this fall, before being released on DVD and Blu-Ray.  The voice cast of the show returns– Steven (voiced by Zach Callison), Garnet (Estelle), Pearl (Deedee Magno), and Amethyst (Michaela Dietz) as well as: Yellow Diamond (Patti LuPone), Bismuth (Uzo Aduba), White Diamond (Christine Ebersole), Blue Diamond (Lisa Hannigan), Peridot (Shelby Rabara), Sapphire (Erica Luttrell), Ruby (Charlyne Yi), Connie Maheswaran (Grace Role), Sadie (Kate Micucci), Lars (Matthew Boy), and Nanefua Pizza (Toks Olagundoye).

This being a musical, the cast were required to sing, and Sugar said:

“The music is so important to the show.  I write songs specifically for my cast members and I like to ask them what kind of music that they like to listen to so that I’m writing songs that they’re excited to sing.”

The movie also features contributions from Chance the Rapper and Aimee Mann among others.  You can hear some of the music in the official trailer for the movie below:

Also available is a documentary snippet of Sugar discussing the creation of ‘The Movie’ and the music for it.  The full doc will be on the DVD/Blu-Ray release, but here is a taste:

As a treat to fans in attendance at the SDCC panel, Sugar and Estelle serenaded the audience with “True Kinda Love.”  Here is a tiny snippet:
