Shazam

Obviously, Black Adam wasn’t in ‘Shazam!’, and Warner Bros. is working on giving Dwayne Johnson his own ‘Black Adam’ movie.  And even without him, ‘Shazam!’ starring Zachary Levi as the superhero who is just a kid at heart– and in reality– was a massive hit, with plans underway for a sequel.  But Levi has some bad news if you were hoping that this follow-up with finally pit the “Big Red Cheese” against the original Shazam-powered champion.

While appearing at Germany’s CCXP Cologne convention, Levi disclosed:

“I can say that as far as I know, Black Adam is not going to be in the second ‘Shazam!’, because the idea is that they want to go and do a standalone ‘Black Adam’ movie first.  And then it would kind of be, if we do a third ‘Shazam!’ and a second ‘Black Adam’, kind of [parallel] like that, that’s where we would [meet].

“Because he’s like the ultimate bad guy for Captain Marvel, Shazam. Like [Shazam and] Black Adam, they’re doppelgängers right, the evil twin to who I am. So that’s got to be like the final battle.

“If we do that in the second movie, then where do we go after that? It would just be a movie of us sitting around playing video games for the third one, that would be very boring. Or not [laughs]. I’m a very interesting video game player. So yeah, I think that’s the idea. We’ll definitely [cross over] — the plan is to get there, but just to pace it out however it needs to pace out.”

Based on Levi’s description, it sounds as though the meeting between these two titans will be so epic that it spans two movies.  But it’s still early and while Levi is the star of ‘Shazam!’ he doesn’t really dictate where the story of that character goes.

‘Shazam!’ already set up the introduction of another villain from the comics, Mister Mind, an intelligent worm with his bespectacled eye on world domination.

‘Black Adam’ will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, who worked with Johnson on the upcoming Disney flick ‘Jungle Cruise’.  Collet-Serra is finishing up that film, with ‘Black Adam’ expected to begin filming in 2020.

Johnson previously declared in an Instagram video:

“I can’t wait to play Black Adam, because they’re all getting their asses kicked when I play Black Adam. That day of reckoning is coming for everyone.”

Warner Bros. will not be at San Diego Comic-Con, so there won’t be any news about either ‘Shazam! 2’ or ‘Black Adam’ from that gathering.  But check back for updates as they emerge.
