‘The Boys’ doesn’t premiere on Amazon Prime Video until July 26th, but it appears that the ambitious superhero spoof is already confirmed to be coming back for a second season, as new casting is underway, and the first bit of news is that Aya Cash is in talks to play the superhero Stormfront. Though Amazon would no comment on the show’s renewal, the streaming giant will have a major presence at San Diego Comic-Con next weekend, including the world premiere of the first episode of ‘The Boys’. If a second season were to be announced, it will most likely be there.
Based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, ‘The Boys’ is a lampoon of traditional superhero comics, mixed with a skewing of politics, celebrities, and pop culture as a whole. The Boys are a blue-collar team of enforcers tasked with keeping the hedonistic superhuman population in check.
Season One will largely focus on The Boys versus The Seven, this world’s parallel to the Justice League, but the comic book features parody versions of various established superheroes like Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, and more. ‘The Boys” version of the Avengers is called Payback, and Stormfront is their version of Thor, with a twist– he’s a neo-Nazi. (“Stormfront” is apparently the name of the web’s biggest neo-Nazi website.)
He’s also a he, so casting a woman, Cash, is a unique take, but one that could certainly work. And it is already known that the TV version of ‘The Boys’ will have a field day with the current American political situation, so bringing in a white supremacist hero is absolutely relevant.
Cash is perhaps best known for starring as the lead Gretchen Cutler in FX and FXX’s five-season dramedy ‘You’re the Worst’. She has since appeared on Netflix’s ‘Easy’, and she portrayed Neil Simon’s wife Joan on FX’s miniseries ‘Fosse/Verdon’.
Be on the lookout for news about ‘The Boys’ next weekend during SDCC. Otherwise, ‘The Boys’ will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 26th.
