Wynonna Earp

The beleaguered Syfy series ‘Wynonna Earp’ will resume production later this year on its fourth season, which will arrive in summer 2020.  Syfy renewed the show for a fourth and fifth season last July, and production was supposed to begin this past February, but production company IDW Entertainment (who also publish the Beau Smith comic book the show is based on) didn’t have the money to create more episodes, after losing a foreign distribution deal with Netflix which carried the show internationally for the first two seasons.  Since then, fans (or Earpers) have launched a #FightForWynonna campaign on social media and have even invested in buying billboards in order to raise funds to save the show.

‘Wynonna Earp’ showrunner and executive producer Emily Andras stated:

“We are absolutely thrilled that we get to make more Wynonna Earp, and are grateful to our networks and partners for working hard to ensure we can.  This is an enormous testament to our passionate and fierce fans, the Earpers, who remind us every day how to fight like hell for the things you love with wit, ferocity and kindness.”

‘Wynonna Earp’ won the 2018 People’s Choice Award for Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show.  It also has a huge LGBTQIA+ following, thanks to its inclusive characters and storylines.

So who came to the rescue of this supernatural western adventure?  A company called Cineflix Studios will co-produce– along with Syfy, Canada’s Space, and Seven24 Films– and will handle international sales of the series.  For their part, Syfy has agreed to pay a higher licensing fee than they are contractually obligated in order to ensure the fourth season gets made.  Space also increased the amount it pays to carry the series in Canada.

IDW Entertainment president Lydia Antonini stated:

“Wynonna Earp – the series, the comics, the characters, the story and the fans are all deeply important to IDW so we are thrilled to be able to continue to tell the Wynonna story.  From the very beginning, the fans have embraced the series and have transformed their passion into an inclusive community built upon empathy and support, as well as whiskey and donuts. We are grateful to have partners who were able to help us bring it back for a fourth season so that we can continue to serve the dedicated Earpers, and entertain fans everywhere.”

In a statement, Syfy announced:

“Syfy has never wavered in its support of Wynonna Earp, a unique and important series with some of the most passionate fans anywhere.  To our Earper friends: Thank you for your patience and faith as we worked with our partners to ensure that Wynonna can get back to where it belongs… on Syfy.”

The network remains committed to not only carrying the fourth season but the fifth which it has already ordered. The gap between seasons three and four will be two years!

Are you glad that ‘Wynonna Earp’ will be back?
