Regina King, Watchmen/HBO

With the movie studios forgoing San Diego Comic-Con this year, it looks like the TV outlets have the place to themselves and HBO is certainly taking advantage.  As was already reported, ‘Game of Thrones’ will hold its final (?) panel.  Now HBO has announced that ‘Westworld’ will also hold a panel, as will new series ‘His Dark Materials’, and another new series, ‘Watchmen’ based on the ’80s DC comic book, will have a “surprise in-world opportunity” in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.  HBO will also host autograph sessions on the convention floor for ‘Game of Thrones’, ‘His Dark Materials’, and ‘Westworld’.

The ‘His Dark Materials’ autograph signing will take place on July 18, at 2:45 pm, to be followed by its first panel will take place at Hall H, at 4:45 pm.  In attendance will be James McAvoy (Lord Asriel), Dafne Keen (Lyra), Lin-Manuel Miranda (Lee Scoresby), Jane Tranter (executive producer) and Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter).  ‘His Dark Materials’ is based on the trilogy of books by Phillip Pullman– ‘Northern Lights’ (a.k.a. ‘The Golden Compass’), ‘The Subtle Knife’ and ‘The Amber Spyglass’– with Jack Thorne penning the TV adaptation, which was directed by Tom Hopper.

The ‘Game of Thrones’ goodbye panel will also take place in Hall H the next day, July 19, at 5:30 pm.  It has now been confirmed that attendees will include:  Jacob Anderson (Grey Worm), John Bradley (Samwell Tarly), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister), Liam Cunningham (Davos Seaworth), Nathalie Emmanuel (Missandei of Naath), Iain Glen (Ser Jorah Mormont), Conleth Hill (Varys), Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) and Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark), creators and showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, and director and executive producer Miguel Sapochnik. As in the case of ‘His Dark Materials’, the ‘GoT’ autograph signing takes place beforehand at 3:30 pm.

Finally, in anticipation of the upcoming third season, ‘Westworld’ will hold its panel on July 20 in Hall H at 1:15 pm. Attending will be executive producers and directors Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, and cast members Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, newcomer Aaron Paul, Tessa Thompson, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jeffrey Wright.  The autograph signing will take place beforehand, at 11:45 am.

There’s no further info on the ‘Watchmen’ “in-world event” but similar attractions have been put in in previous years and those are open to everyone, even those who didn’t score tickets for SDCC.  It appears that HBO wants to keep this series under wraps, so it doesn’t look as though anyone affiliated with the show will be in attendance (at least in a professional capacity).

Are you headed to SDCC next month?  If so, which of these events are you most excited about?
