‘Avengers: Endgame’ has won its first awards, at the ‘MTV Movie & TV Awards’. The crossover epic took the top award of the night, Best Movie, as well as Best Hero for Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man), and Best Villain for Josh Brolin (Thanos).
At the awards show, hosted by ‘Shazam!’s Zachary Levi, ‘Endgame’ bested Spike Lee’s ‘BlacKkKlansman’, Sony’s animated ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’, Netflix teen rom-com ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’, and Jordan Peele’s frightening ‘Us’.
Ouch! Downey bested the show’s host Levi, who was nominated for ‘Shazam!’. Downey also beat Brie Larson for ‘Captain Marvel’, John David Washington for ‘BlacKkKlansman’, Maisie Williams for ‘Game of Thrones’. Brolin topped Jodie Comer for ‘Killing Eve’, Joseph Fiennes for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, Lupita Nyong’o for ‘Us’, and Penn Badgley for ‘You’.
In another Marvel victory, ‘Captain Marvel’ won Best Fight, between Brie Larson’s title character and villain Minn-Erva (Gemma Chan). The runners-up were ‘Avengers: Endgame’/Captain America Vs. Thanos, ‘GoT’/Arya vs. the White Walkers, ‘RBG’/Ruth Bader Ginsberg vs. Inequality, and WWE Wrestlemania.
Despite the vocal outcry from fandom, there is still love for ‘Game of Thrones’, as the departed HBO series won Best TV Show, over an eclectic mix of Netflix’s animated comedy ‘Big Mouth’, stalwart CW teen smash ‘Riverdale’, Candian comedy ‘Schitt’s Creek’, and the Netflix miniseries ‘The Haunting of Hill House’.
Ruth Bader Ginsberg was nominated for a bizarrely high number of categories, and won for Best Real-Life Hero, but the most political that these awards got besides that, was granting the Best Performance on a (TV) Show prize to Elisabeth Olsen for ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, besting Emilia Clarke for ‘Game of Thrones’, Gina Rodriguez for ‘Jane the Virgin’, and Kiernan Shipka for ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’.
