With ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ closing out the first arc of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is easy to overlook the fact that ‘Dark Phoenix‘ will also be ending a 20-year run of the “X-Men” franchise for Fox. This is even more of an endcap as the MCU will continue on while the saga of the mutants is likely over until Marvel Studios reboots all of the properties short of Deadpool.
Going into the movie, director Simon Kinberg kept this very idea close to his heart. In fact, it was a driving force on how he crafted the narrative for ‘Dark Phoenix’ as:
“I approach this movie as the culmination of 20 years of storytelling, of living with the X-Men for all this time and watching this family come together, and this movie is the movie that challenged that family and tears them apart in a new way, and so I imagined it as the culmination, and I even pitched it to the studio, as this is the culmination of this cycle of X-Men stories. Which there will be more X-Men movies in the future no doubt, but this particular cycle with this cast, it felt like it was time to do kind of what Game of Thrones has done, what Endgame has done, really see them challenged in a new way and sort of survive and go off into the sunset.”
One can only hope that as this is his directorial debut that he can capture the essence of these stories and deliver a solid ending for fans.

This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
‘Dark Phoenix’ will rise in your local theaters on June 7th, 2019!
