Netflix Greenlights Superhero Romantic Comedy 'Omega Girl Falls In Love'

Netflix is still trying to score a massive four-quadrant film on par with theatrical releases like the Marvel movies from Disney.  It has managed to land a few buzzy successes like ‘Bird Box‘ and ‘Bright‘, but many of its other higher-profile pictures have fizzled, including ‘The Cloverfield Paradox‘, ‘Mute‘, and most recently the all-star action flick, ‘Triple Frontier’, starring Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Garrett Hedlund, and Pedro Pascal.

But one area where the streaming service has done quite well is with romantic comedies, having scored huge hits with ‘Set It Up’, ‘The Kissing Booth’, and ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’, among others.  Now Netflix is taking this genre in which they have been most successful and combining it with the king of all movie categories, superheroes.

Enter ‘Omega Girl Falls in Love’ penned by Timothy Dowling (‘Office Christmas Party’, ‘Pixels’, ‘Role Models’).  Liza Chasin will produce under her 3dot Productions banner.  Among her credits are romantic classics like the ‘Bridget Jones’ franchise, ‘About a Boy’, ‘Love Actually’, ‘Pride & Prejudice’, and ‘Les Misérables’.  But she also has experience with action– ‘Smokin’ Aces’, ‘Green Zone’, ‘Baby Driver’– and perhaps even more importantly, movies that mix action and humor, like the ‘Johnny English’ pictures, ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’, and ‘The World’s End’.

Another project that Dowling wrote, ‘This Means War’, starring Reese Witherspoon, Chris Pine, and Tom Hardy, also meshed romance and action, specifically spy action, not superheroes, but this could still give fans an idea of what to expect from ‘Omega Girl Falls in Love’.

This project is not based on an existing comic book character, and it is early in the process, so there is no casting yet.  There isn’t even a director attached yet.  It most likely won’t be out until 2020 at the earliest.

At any rate, the closest film to come close to what this sounds like is 2006’s flop ‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend’, directed by Ivan Reitman, and starring Uma Thurman, Luke Wilson, and Anna Faris.  Hopefully, ‘Omega Girl Falls in Love’ turns out better than that.
