Tony Stark

Many of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes had a chance to have iconic moments and lines in ‘Avengers: Endgame‘ but one of the best by Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark almost went unfilmed. In fact, the key phrase he uttered that caused the audience I sat with to cheer was a last minute addition!

It came during a moment that the directors felt something more was needed but weren’t sure exactly what that could be.

Warning, folks, there are spoilers ahead!

Now, in the film once Thanos took the Iron Infinity Gauntlet and put it on he boldly stated once again that “I am inevitable” and snapped his fingers. Only in this iteration, nothing happened as Stark used his technology to take the stones into his own armor. The genius, billionaire, playboy philanthropist responds with “And I am Iron Man” and snaps his fingers eradicating the Mad Titan and all of his army.

Only, this response that brought the Marvel Cinematic Universe full circle wasn’t filmed initially or even in the script!

According to the Russo Brothers:

“Tony used to not say anything in that moment. And we were in the editing room going, ‘He has to say something. This a character who has lived and died by quips.’ And we just couldn’t, we tried a million different last lines. Thanos was saying “I am inevitable.” And our editor Jeff Ford, who’s been with us all four movies and is an amazing storyteller, said ‘Why don’t we just go full circle with it and say I am Iron Man.’ And we’re like, ‘Get the cameras! We have to shoot this tomorrow.’ “

I believe fans everywhere can agree that we should thank Jeff Ford for this quick thinking and finding a way to tie all of these films further together.

Are you glad that Tony Stark ended up being able to go out by saying “I Am Iron Man”? Can you imagine another line which would have worked quite as effectively at the end of the film? Share your thoughts in the comments below, True Believers!

‘Avengers: Endgame’ is currently in theaters everywhere.
